Wild Weekly’s Photo Challenge: Black & White

I’m participating in the onlineadventure travel and photography magazine LetsBeWild.com’s Wild Weekly Photo Challenge for bloggersThis week’s Challenge is: Black and White!

First of all, a BIG Thank You! for the Honorable Mention for the last contest UP with the balloons.

I love Black and White, it has so much to offer for emotional connections.  I love the simplicity of the medium.  Here is one of my most favorite black & white photos I’ve taken.

_RW_2537This is the Temple of Sinawava, in Zion National Park, during the winter.

I took a series of black & white photographs on this same day.  Here is another favorite from this series, which I call “The Crossing”.

I love the mystery of this image.  It draws me in to the frame, asking, “What’s on the other side?” or “Where are we going?”  or “What’s in the future?”  So many philosophical thought processes can be associated with this image.  This was taken in The Court of the Patriarchs in Zion National Park.

Here is the Great White Throne.

This is a tree I found in the Arizona Desert, near Mount Trumble.

_RW_0932This is a juniper tree, these live for hundreds of years, no telling how old this one is.

You can have a lot of fun with black & white.  Have you ever looked for shapes in nature where you normally wouldn’t see them?  Check out these two images.  What do you see?

I also love the contrast in black & white images, such as this rock in the stream bed.  The rocks are saturated with salt from the Salt Cedar, or Tamarisk tree, which is an invasive species in Southern Utah.

Finally, I love the simple details in old machinery that can be achieved with black & white.  I found this movie camera outside a Hollywood Museum in Jerome, Arizona.

Hope you enjoyed the images!

  1. Very nice Kelly. Enjoyed the Zion shots as we were there last summer. Especially liked the bridge in the snow.

  2. Beautiful nature shots. The snowy bridge one is particularly attractive. :-)

  3. Great set… wouldn’t have guessed the bridge shot was in Zion!
